10 Best Pit Sectionals of 2023

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

Comfortable and stylish sofas made for lounging, even in a small space.

The ultimate solution for movie night, superior naps and all-day lounging, pit sectional sofas are defined by their deep cushions and their ability to shape into a bed. Unlike a sleeper sofa, a pit sectional is comprised of modular couch pieces that can be reconfigured, so the entire "bed" is actually made from plush, soft couch cushions. That means, with a modular sofa, one day you can have a left-facing or U-shaped sectional and the next, a bed-like pit sectional.

They're a great option for spacious living rooms or large families, but we recommend plenty of the best pit sectionals below to accommodate small spaces or apartment living. No matter how big your space or what style you prefer, you'll want an option that's comfortable, stylish and durable.

To compile this roundup of the top pit sectionals, we consulted the product testing experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute and looked to their recommendations for the best sectionals and the best sofas. We also scoured online reviews and analyzed recent sofa surveys to evaluate how our panelists rated certain brands. As with any sofa, it's important to consider construction (like fabric, fill and leg materials) and size (you'll need a sofa that fits your living room), as well as delivery, ease of assembly (can you assemble it yourself?) and return policies.

So whether you're looking for an affordable couch or you're willing to splurge on something more luxurious, read on to find out why we deemed these pit sectionals the very best on the market right now.

During testing for the best sectional sofas, panelists had great things to say about Albany Park's modular pieces — noting that the cushions felt warm and soft, and that delivery was quick and assembly was easy. All parts arrive in easy-to-move boxes, and you don't need additional tools for set up. Not to mention, the brand offers free shipping and any-reason returns.

While this pick is not customizable (possibly a pro for those who want a sofa faster), there's an option to choose an ottoman with or without storage. Plus, there's a number of fabric choices like woven textures in neutral hues (beige, charcoal, white and gray) and velvet in trendier shades (think rust, blue and mustard), so you can still personalize this cloud-soft pick to pair with your home.

A comfortable, versatile sectional sofa for less than $1,200 is almost unheard of — yet, there's this stylish pick from Wayfair. It has six modular pieces, which can be reconfigured into a sectional sofa with a detached ottoman or a bed-like, pit sectional. While online reviewers found that the sofa looks large, it's only 104" wide (smaller than the average sectional size), so it can accommodate tighter living room layouts as well.

Another great perk? Wayfair will deliver this inexpensive sofa for free relatively fast. The only downside is there's only two neutral color options, gray and beige.

If comfort is your top priority, look no further than the Harmony Pit Sectional from West Elm — which we've voted the best RH Cloud couch dupe for its sinkable cushions and cloud-like feel. In terms of firmness (with 5 being the firmest), West Elm rates this pick a 1. Plus, our panelists described this pick as "extremely comfortable."

On top of delivering a cozy feel, the Harmony Pit Sectional has a stylish look and can be customized in over 100 different fabrics (including basketweave, velvet and linen). Just note that because this sofa is custom, it may take months to be delivered — it's also a bit pricey compared to other picks.

If you've got a small living room, Amazon has your solution with this stylish sofa that's only 87" wide. According to online reviewers, the modular sofa is easy to assemble, sturdy and offers a lot of value for the money. Each piece of the couch can be moved and reassembled freely, making it possible to accommodate small or awkward layouts. Probably the best part? The modular pieces all contain hidden storage, a game-changer for apartment or tiny-house living.

If you are looking for something a bit larger but still budget-friendly, HONBAY offers a bigger sofa sectional, which has 10 pieces in total. No matter which option you choose, Amazon will ship your item for free within a few days. The only downside? The modern sofa is only available in three colors: grey, bluish grey and aqua blue.

Seen as the best overall modular sofa by the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, the Lovesac Sactional is a great pick for families and kids, or anyone who loves the flexibility of changing their living room layout on a regular basis. Reviewers love that the pieces can be rearranged or separated for different functions (example: making room for a kid's blanket fort). It also doubles as a guest bed for those without a guest bedroom!

Another great attribute of this modern sofa: Each cover can be removed and machine washed (genius for households with kids and pets). The brand allows you to customize nearly everything, from the fabric color and fill material to arm style. Some testers did note that this sofa is difficult to assemble.

Although a bit pricey, the Arhaus Coburn Pit Sectional is a beauty — it has deep cushions, square arms and a ton of toss pillows that give it a luxurious feel. It's upholstered in a performance fabric that was designed to resist stations, and there's a number of neutral colors to choose from, including multiple shades of cream. The brand will also send you up to five free swatches, so you can be sure to settle on the perfect shade.

Our panelists found that the couch looks stylish, the cushions are comfortable and the fabric holds up well to stains, although some noted that they're pricey.

Another great choice for small spaces, this sleek sectional lounger from Burrow is only 91.5" wide and is delivered in compact boxes (great for narrow, apartment hallways). Online reviewers love that the low profile and deep seat setup can be reconfigured to fit their space. One writes, "Each section is easy to assemble and combine. The instructions were simple to follow as well. The boxes weren’t too heavy where I couldn’t bring them inside by myself."

Although we haven't tested the Burrow Range Lounger, our panelists have great things to say about the brand — mostly noting the easy assembly and easy-to-clean fabric. Choose from four fabric finishes and three leg finishes to find a chic match for your interior.

Although this modular sofa only has four pieces, online reviewers agree it feels large and spacious. It can be converted from a traditional sectional into an extra-long sofa, then into a pit sectional with ease. Reviewers found that the deep seats are comfortable and the corduroy fabric is soft. One writes, "It’s so deep that you kind of have to climb in (5'3" person).

This well-designed sofa is available in four popular color options: dark grey, beige, dark green and ginger. While reviewers are pleased with their purchase overall, some were unhappy that the couch took over a month to be delivered.

Survey respondents like Crate & Barrel's Axis sectionals because they're comfortable, stylish and durable — especially for families with children, dogs and cats. The brand will also send free swatches, so you can test out the fabric before buying.

Panelists also note that Crate & Barrel's fabrics hold up well to spills and stains, and tend to be easy to wipe clean. Choose from over 200 fabric colors and 14 leg styles to customize this spacious sectional to pair with your home design. The brand also allows you to create your own sectional, but since this option is highly customizable, it may take several months to receive your sofa.

Online reviewers love that the Espinosa Modular Sectional is comfortable, stylish and spacious — although they remind us of the importance of measuring, as some note this sofa is bigger than expected. It's 133.5" wide and 90" deep, making it the perfect solution for large living rooms or for accommodating large families. In fact, Wayfair claims it seats over six people. Not to mention, it costs less than $2,000!

The stylish sofa is upholstered in corduroy and available in four colors: dark grey, beige, ginger and dark green. Although you can reconfigure the sofa as you wish, it cannot be customized online.
